I am an installation artist. My childhood
plays a part in the nature of the art I create. I was born in 1975
in Homestead, Florida. My mother worked as an ornithologist in
Everglades National Park. Before I graduated from high school,
my family lived in 14 different places, following the migratory
paths of the wetlands bird species in a migratory pattern of its
own. When I was a kid, I spent my time following my mother through
swamps and marshes, and I started collected specimens and interesting
objects. I always seemed to be getting uprooted, so I carried my
collections, in a large suitcase, arranging the increasing contents
in my room at each new location. I started a science degree in
college but I left because I really wanted to make art. My first
pieces were small sculptures of animals. Now I create installations
that include arrangements of found and created objects. I had a
rambling childhood but I still like to travel, collecting wherever
I go.
